Prepare exposed plumbing before the first hard freeze
Fit insulated covers over outdoor hose spigots and disconnect the hoses. In crawl spaces, insulate exposed water lines and seal drafts around them. If a pipe needs supplemental heat, install listed heat tape or heat wire according to its instructions before freezing weather is forecast—supplies can sell out when a storm is already approaching. Never overlap heat tape or cover it with insulation unless the manufacturer allows it.
